Treatment Five of seven
Jaw Tension & Clenching
For clenching, grinding, tension headaches, tooth wear and lower-face width.
Overview
Bruxism, the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth, commonly presents with symptoms extending well beyond the jaw. These include morning jaw tightness and aching, headaches through the temples, tooth wear and sensitivity, earache, and disturbed sleep.
Sustained clenching also produces a physical change to facial shape. The jaw muscles enlarge in response to repeated load, as any muscle does under regular work, which over time creates a heavier and more square appearance through the lower face.
Reasons patients present
- Persistent jaw tightness, aching or fatigue
- Frequent tension headaches, particularly on waking
- Tooth wear, sensitivity or damage identified by a dentist
- Widening or squaring of the lower face and jawline
- A desire for a softer, more tapered facial contour
Your consultation
Mia will assess jaw function, muscle bulk and facial proportions, and take a full history including sleep, stress, bite and dental history. She will then discuss the management options that may be appropriate for you, including the associated risks, side effects and limitations of each, and what each can and cannot address.
Where the underlying cause falls outside the scope of cosmetic management, referral to your dentist, general practitioner or an appropriate specialist will be recommended.
Outcomes
Patients are generally seeking symptomatic relief, a softer lower facial contour, or both. Suitability is determined individually at consultation and outcomes differ between individuals.
