Treatment Four of seven

Skin Needling

For skin texture, acne scarring, enlarged pores and stretch marks.

What skin needling is

Skin needling, also known as microneedling or collagen induction therapy, is a clinical procedure that uses fine sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries stimulate the body's natural wound healing response, increasing production of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin structure, firmness and elasticity.

Treatment at the clinic is performed with SkinPen® Precision, a medical grade needling device included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, used with sterile single use cartridges. One cartridge is used per patient.

What it treats

  • Acne scarring and other atrophic scarring
  • Rough or uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged looking pores
  • Fine lines
  • Uneven tone and general skin quality
  • Stretch marks and scarring on the body

Benefits

Skin needling produces measurable improvement in skin texture rather than a surface level change. Across a course, patients commonly report a smoother and more even skin surface, reduced depth and visibility of scarring, refined pore appearance and improved overall skin quality. Because collagen remodelling continues after each session, results accumulate over the course and are typically most evident several weeks after the final treatment.

How treatment is performed

Needle depth is adjusted for each treatment area and for individual skin type and thickness. A topical preparation is applied prior to treatment, and most patients describe the sensation as a mild prickling or vibration.

What to expect afterwards

Redness resembling mild sunburn is expected for approximately 24 to 72 hours, followed by tightness and light flaking. Less common effects include bruising, prolonged irritation, changes in pigmentation and, rarely, infection. Strict sun protection is required following treatment, and full aftercare instructions are provided.

Questions about skin needling

What are the risks?

Skin needling is a medical procedure with risks, including redness, swelling, bruising, pigment changes and, rarely, infection or scarring. Mia will explain all of them before treatment.

Which areas can be treated?

The face, neck and décolletage are the most commonly treated areas. Specific areas on the body can also be targeted, including scarring, acne scarring and stretch marks.

How many treatments will I need?

Skin needling is cumulative and is performed as a course of sessions spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on your skin type and the concern being treated, and is agreed at your consultation.

Will it work for me?

Skin needling suits most skin types, in line with the SkinPen manufacturer guidelines, and is used for uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, acne scarring, other scarring and stretch marks. It is not appropriate for everyone — certain skin conditions, medications and medical histories are contraindications. Mia assesses your suitability at consultation. Individual responses vary and results cannot be guaranteed.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

Stop active skincare — retinoids and vitamin A, AHAs, BHAs and vitamin C — for around seven days beforehand, and avoid sun exposure, tanning and sunburn in the lead-up. Come in with clean skin and no makeup.

What aftercare is required?

Avoid makeup, strenuous exercise, saunas and swimming for the first 24 to 72 hours, and keep actives off the skin for about seven days. Your skin will be more sun-sensitive afterwards, so daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ and avoiding direct UV exposure for at least two weeks is essential — written instructions are provided at your appointment.

Fees

Confirmed at consultation, based on the treatment area and the number of sessions in your course.
